Specifically for Pit Bulls:

If you’re having trouble getting a rescue to help you, consider having some routine veterinary services done. Getting the dog spayed/neutered and heartworm tested can make the dog more attractive to rescue. Reputable rescues will only adopt out a dog that has been spayed/neutered. Taking care of spaying/neutering for them makes it less expensive for them to help you. Puppies should, at the very least, have their first round of distemper-parvo vaccination, as it protects the puppy from disease.
